The Portsmouth congregation had its humble beginning towards the end of 2009. The first spiritual gathering was a prayer meeting on Sunday 13th Dec 2009. This was followed by the first ever Holy Qurbana on Sat 13th March 2010. The Holy Qurbana was presided by Rev Fr.Mathews Kuriakose(Tiju Achan). On Sat 11th Sept 2010, H.G.Dr. Mathews Mar Thimothios Metropolitan, Diocese of UK, Europe & Africa of The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, proclaimed the congregation as an independent Parish. Rev. Fr. Mathews Kuriakose was appointed as the vicar of the parish by His Grace.
The Church has grown, over the years, and at present there are 32 registered families. These families are from areas in and around Portsmouth and Southampton.
The Parish holds Holy Eucharistic Service (Holy Qurbana) on the Second Saturday of every month.
The Parish runs a Catechetical School, which holds regular classes on every second Saturday after the Holy Qurbana . The Oriental Orthodox Curriculum is followed
The St George’s IOC Prayer Group meets every month on a second Friday in one of the member’s home.
Saint Mary’s Women’s Association
Saint Mary’s Women’s Association (Morth Mariam Samajam) is the women’s association of the Indian Orthodox Church.The group holds regular meetings after the Holy Qurbana.The meeting will start with the prayers and intercession of Saint Mary. The group then meditates and discusses a topic of interest or other relevant church issues.
Anchored on the fundamental ‘sharing’ values, different charitable projects are undertaken in partnership and support with its members and well wishers. The parish is open in its approach in responding to any genuine need at home or abroad.Focus will be on most deserving people by offering financial aid to people in poverty for their medical treatment, homelessness and education.

After seminary education Fr Anoop was the personal secretary of H H Baselios Marthoma Didymos I Catholicos. Ordained as priest by H G Dr Mathews Mar Severios metropolitan for Kandanadu (W) Diocese. He served as the vicar of Muttom St. Mary's Orthodox Church and Asst. Vicar of Pampakuda St. John's Orthodox Church. Recently he completed his higher studies in Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome.He has since been appointed as the Vicar of 3 Churches in the UK by H G Mathews Mar Thimothios Metropolitan for the Diocese of UK, Europe & Africa
Rev. Fr. Thomas P. John, the Vicar of St.Gregorios Indian Orthodox Church,Brockley,London was the interim Vicar from Aug'14 to 31st Oct'14.
Rev Fr. Mathews Kuriakose is popularly known as Tiju Achen. He was appointed by H G Mathews Mar Thimothios in Dec 2009 to start the congregation in Portsmouth. He worked hard with the orthodox community in Gosport, Portsmouth,Southampton and adjoining areas and that enabled the church to establish its roots firmly and grow in the last 4 years. He left us to serve other Churches in the North in Aug 2014.
